Astrology Newsletter: November 2009
Number 68
The energy quickens this month with the first of three Saturn transits to Pluto as Saturn enters Libra. The players start to align for what has been called ‘the Cardinal Climax’, a line up of heavy weight planets that will occur in cardinal signs in the middle of next year. Saturn has been opposing Uranus on and off since November 2008 and now Pluto joins the mix. These same three planets, Pluto, Uranus and Saturn, were in hard aspect during the early 1930’s, but the mix is a little different this time and humanity has hopefully learned from the past. I will add to this story as we move towards the astrological climax in mid 2010.
The ‘Cardinal Climax’ alignment powerfully suggests we need to find a way to embrace our personal and collective fears and make peace with our demons. This all feels very much part of the collective initiation often referred to as the ‘Ascension’ process. It is a potentially regenerative process that could see old, out dated beliefs, paradigms and political, economic and social structures released and transformed. Let’s hope so! We can focus the light on a positive outcome and all do our little bit by making friends with our fear.

1. November Overview
All dates and times are for Australian Eastern Standard Time – Daylight time from October 4
- November 3: Full Moon in Taurus
- November 5: Neptune direct
- November 8: Venus to Scorpio
- November 16: Saturn square Pluto
- November 16: Mercury to Sagittarius
- November 17: New Moon in Scorpio[
- November 22: Sun to Sagittarius
Saturn entered Libra on October 31, heralding a two and a half year period where there will be an increased need to take review and perhaps re-structure our values, relating patterns and relationships. Saturn always challenges us to take responsibility for our lives and offers us the opportunity to learn from life and develop wisdom and maturity. On an international level this may lead to the review of national /international values, treaties and alliances. I would expect some shifts in these areas as ask themselves how much their current alliances reflect their current values. [See last month’s newsletter for more information on this transit]
The Full Moon on November 3 is in the Scorpio / Taurus polarity and this polarity deals with the need to ground our desires and be practical about our emotions. Full Moons are potentially times of powerful insights and re-balancing if we can find the time to sit still and reflect on the energies involved. The Taurean Full Moon spotlights our values and our relationship with the physical and material worlds. We may need to listen to our bodies and give them the attention they need; or we may need to sort our finances or put our financial/security needs in perspective. All this must be weighed against our opposing Scorpionic needs for deep intimacy, [with self and others], sharing and transformation. Taurus calls us to build and create while Scorpio calls us to release and let go.
The Full Moon squares Mars in Leo, firing up the atmosphere and contributing to the eruption of angry and competitive feelings, especially if we have been trying to keep a lid on resentment. Try to find some time to sit with any unexpressed anger and process it so it does not escalate into something bigger than it needs to be. You may like to channel the high energy of this Full Moon into some physical outlet or challenge – just make sure you don’t take any unnecessary risks. Remember, Full Moons are always powerful times to meditate and gain insight.
November 5 sees Neptune turn direct just after the Full Moon having completes its annual five months retrograde. Whenever a planet makes a station and turns direct its energy becomes more powerful and focused. Neptune symbolizes our ability to surrender our ego and open to the imaginal, spiritual and transpersonal realms of intuitive knowing but it can also symbolize self deception and confusion. Sit with any insights or strong intuitive feelings for a while before acting on them to make sure they are ‘real’.
On November 16 Saturn will square Pluto for the first of three ‘hits’ but the influence of this transit will colour the whole month. This transit emphasizes the need for embracing political and economic realities and necessities and dealing with the current crises. On a personal level it challenges us to let go old fears [Pluto] and take responsibility for what limits us and keeps us trapped in our defences [Saturn]. I feel it is very important to focus on positive outcomes and not get lost in the negative potential of this configuration. More information in section 2, including a list of positive ways this energy can be channelled.
The New Moon on November 17 is in Scorpio. The New Moon is always a powerful time to set new intentions and the New Moon in Scorpio is a potent time to own our passions and set intentions relating to our personal growth as well as deepening our relationship with loved ones. Scorpio invites us to see what no longer serves us and needs to be released. As the ruler of the process of death and rebirth, Scorpio empowers us to look within, face our fears and take another step on the path of self mastery.
This chart has a dynamic square from the New Moon to the Jupiter, Chiron, Neptune conjunction, challenging us to look at what blocks us from
becoming more positive [Jupiter], seeking healing [Chiron] and opening our hearts and accessing our inner vision [Neptune] The supportive trine from Uranus can assist us in releasing blocks.
2. Saturn Square Pluto
- November 16 2009
- February 1 2010
- August 21 2010
On November 16 Saturn will square Pluto for the first of three transits. It symbolizes the need for structural [Saturn] transformation [Pluto] at the deepest [Pluto] levels in all spheres of life: political, economic, social and cultural. The Saturn / Pluto Cycle is a 33 year cycle and the hard aspects [conjunction, square and opposition] seems to have a powerful connection with
- power shifts & struggles
- the rise and fall of nations and empires
- volatile market forces
- the rise of marginal and disenfranchised groups.
On a personal level the combination of these two planets talks of taking responsibility [Saturn] for our personal and collective shadows [Pluto]. Both these planets symbolize energies that can lead to wisdom and self mastery through confrontations with the shadow. Saturn/Pluto often confronts us with hard truths that we would rather ignore, but we do so at our own peril. To ignore powerful archetypal energies such as these invites in the negative potential, this can be dark, destructive and subversive. Both Saturn and Pluto are associated with fear, depression, power, control and the shadow as well as self mastery. Saturn invites us to become an authority in our chosen domain and Pluto offers us initiation into the hidden mysteries.
We could all benefit from the wisdom of the Buddhist sages to welcome and make friends with our demons. This feels the most constructive way to approach this transit. It feels very important to focus on the positive outcomes that this transit can foster and not contribute to the collective fear.
Saturn once defined the limits of the solar system and is associated with limitation and contraction, the Law of Karma and the lessons learned through time and maturity. The positive expression of Saturn is mature, responsible, authoritative, patient and conscientious. The negative expression of Saturn is fearful of change, authoritarian, rigid and judgemental. Pluto also defined the boundaries of our solar system until the recent discovery of the Kuiper Belt and is associated with the principle of death and rebirth. The positive expression of Pluto is transformative and regenerative, willing to let go control and face the dark within and without to allow this process. The negative Pluto is controlling, obsessive, destructive, subversive and sometimes demonic when it is possessed by the darkness.
The current transit takes the form of a ‘square aspect’, traditionally seen as challenging. Squares are often portrayed as the bad guys in astrology because they create tension and conflict; however this tension is necessary for change and growth. Instead of focusing on the negative potential of the square we can shift our focus to the creative potential inherent in this aspect and reflect on how these two feared planetary forces can work together and become agents for constructive change. This square is the waning square in the cycle and as such suggests a ‘crisis in consciousness’ rather than a crisis in action, so the main thrust of the alignment may be to shift our thinking about fear itself !
The positive expression of this energy can take the form of
- responsible and disciplined use of power
- mature and wise use of power
- learning constructive lessons about power and control
- transformative and regenerative authority
- letting go limited paradigms and structures so regeneration can take place
- intense determination to restructure and transform
- regenerative re structuring
- self mastery through facing the our demons [shadow and fear]
And now, a bit of historical background…
The current Saturn/ Pluto cycle began in 1982 in the sign of Libra and coincided with Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan and the Falkland’s War. Saturn is said to be exalted in Libra, perhaps softening the effects of the meeting of these two giants and diluting some of the negative effects of this cycle. At the opposition in 2001 the Twin Towers were attacked and the ‘War on Terror’ was declared and has been a dominant energy ever since. We now find ourselves at the waning square, often characterized as a crisis in consciousness and sometimes as a ‘crisis of authority’, however the square has not been associated with the momentous events often found at the conjunction and opposition.
In 1947 the two planets conjuncted and the Cold War began. At the opposition in 1965-6 we saw the Vietnam War, Civil Rights riots in the US and the Cultural Revolution in China.
In 1914 when they conjuncted we saw World War One erupt. At the opposition in 1931 the Great Depression began and Stalinism and Fascism were gaining power.
