 Astrology Newsletter: October 2011

Number 91

This is a briefer newsletter than usual as October sees no major planetary configurations becoming exact and no planets changing direction, but that does not mean it will be uneventful as the cardinal square is still operating, challenging us personally and collectively to face our fears and make deep seated changes.

Relationships and the need for balance are highlighted this month with the full moon in Aries [and the Sun in Libra] and a tense square between Venus and Mars later in the month.

Blessings

October Overview

As there are no planets changing direction or forming exact aspects it feels like October is the perfect time to step back from the current collective chaos and take some time out to decide what is of most personal importance. The full moon and new moon are key points where it will be important to ‘breathe’ and reflect on how the larger scale collective energy is impacting on our lives.

September 23 heralded the Equinoxes [spring in the southern hemisphere and autumn in the northern hemisphere], marking the time of equal day and equal night. The equinoxes always call us to see where our lives have slipped out of balance, and find a way to rectify this. TheOctober Full Moonis the perfect time to seek illumination on this subject as it repeats the themes of the equinoxes - which mark the entry of the Sun into the signs of Aries and Libra – as this full moon sees the Sun in Libra and the Moon in Aries.

The October Full Moontakes placeat18 Aries on October 12 at 1.05pm[Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time]. TheAries full moonis reminding us to balance our needs for partnership and co-operation [Sun in Libra]with our needs to be true to our self[Moon in Aries]. The Aries / Libra polarity deals with our conflicting needs for freedom, independence, adventure and competition [Aries] and our needs for partnership, fairness, compromise, and co-operation [Libra]. If you have swung too far to one extreme it is an appropriate time to create more balance in your life.

The full moon also conjuncts the Black Moon, opposes Saturn and trines Mars. This is a challenging lunation that requires a delicate balancing act between the yang energies of the Sun conjunct Saturn and the yin energies of the Moon conjunct the Black Moon. The supportive trine from Mars may provide the courage and drive to make necessary changes.

The Sun conjunct Saturn[exact the day after the full moon] is a very responsible and dutiful image that suggests the potential to feel easily feel worn down by doing the ‘right thing’. It presents a very logical persona, one that considers others needs and seeks to be objective and fair but may become rigid and judgemental. TheMoon conjunct the Black Moon in Ariessuggests something quite different: a primal, feminine autonomy and wildness that seeks expression and could cause difficulties if it is not allowed to be lived. So here we have two very different energies that both seek to be honoured at this time.

How do we balance our needs for order and respect with our need to confront and challenge that very same order?

Saturn demands that we attend to our responsibilities, yet the fiery feminine energy may sabotage our best laid plans and respectable personas if she is not allowed some space. If we repress our feminine instinctual side [Moon conjunct the Black Moon] we may also find our self experiencing the darker side of Saturn: fear, negativity and depression.

Can we be practical and logical as well as instinctual and adventurous?

Can we find time in our lives to honour our responsibilities as well as our wildness?

Remember, it is not either or, but how both energies be accommodated.

The New Moon in Scorpiotakes placeat 6.55am[Australian Eastern Daylight Time]on October 27. The New Moon occurs at 3 Scorpio and conjuncts Juno, opposes Jupiter, trines Neptune and Chiron, quincunxes Uranus and sextiles Pluto. This lunation has a very different flavour to the full moon which was coloured by Saturn.

This new moon is a potent time to set new intentions and embark on new endeavours as the energy is more supportive. Theopposition from Jupitersuggests a more benevolent atmosphere, although the urge to jump into new experiences too impulsively must be watched. The trine to Neptune and Chiron brings in healing energy and the opportunity to feel more compassion and forgiveness for ourselves and others. The sextile from Pluto gives strength and determination.

The new moon chart also contains an exact square between Venus in Scorpio and Mars in Leo, echoing the themes in the full moon chart. [Venus rules Libra and Mars rules Aries] The square is a tense aspect and suggests tension between the Venusian needs for partnership, co-operation and affection, and the Martian needs for adventure, freedom and competition. Essentially this is about bringing the lover and warrior archetypes into a constructive relationship when they may prefer to clash. How can your [inner] peace-maker, lover and diplomat [Venus] find a way to work with your [inner] warrior and adventurer [Mars]?

This aspect may lead to some fireworks in relationships as it speaks of competition in relationships and sexual conflict but it is a passionate image that can provoke romantic fireworks and sexual adventure. The key question remains: can your feminine side find a way to work constructively with your masculine side?

Around October 31 / November 1Venus in Scorpio squaresNeptunein Aquarius, adding another layer to the Venus / Mars square. These three planets actually form a t-square in the new moon chart, creating a romantic atmosphere, but also bringing in themes of confusion and possible delusion if we allow ourselves to get lost in the seductive arms ofNeptune. This configuration speaks of the need for creative, imaginative and spiritual outlets and warns us to remain alert to excessive naiveté and idealization.
