Astrology Newsletter: September 2007: Number 42

The Mysteries of Virgo dominate September with both a solar eclipse in Virgo preceding Saturn’s transit into this sign. September is the month to engage in the process of self reflection and purification and ask how we can be of service to others and our planet. For those of you who are esoterically inclined and are working with the Ascension process, the imagery suggests a speeding up and intensification of this initiation.

The September 11 eclipse is the second Solar Eclipse for 2007. The chart reveals a dramatic and potentially anarchistic grand cross that suggests the need for constructive change and release if we wish to avoid chaos, disruption and perhaps even destruction. We will need to listen to our hearts and avoid any fear that leads us to resist the necessary processes of change, catharsis and letting go.

The article on Pluto and Chiron has been held over to next month when Pluto makes its last exact conjunction of the Galactic Centre.

 Blessings

September is a powerful time for meditation and self reflection. Esoteric writers are talking of the potential for major paradigm shifts as portals open through out the month. Astrologically we can see this imagery reflected in the events in the sky as Saturn moves into Virgo and a very highly charged solar eclipse dominates the astrological landscape. Later in the month the Equinox heralds another opportunity for inner work.

Pluto remains stationery and conjunct the Galactic Centre but turns direct on September 8, preparing for its final exact conjunction of the GC later next month. It also figures prominently in the eclipse chart for September 11, intensifying the need to let go the past and whatever limits our growth and awareness.

Solar Eclipses are especially potent New Moons that mark the ending and beginning of cycles. The September 11 eclipse in Virgo contains a volatile grand cross that is potentially explosive. We will all need to take care to hold our centres and not contribute to the collective anger and aggression. Key dates to be especially careful are the eclipse of September 11, September 18 when Mars squares the eclipse point and September 21 when Mars opposes Pluto and the GC.  [More information in part 2 on the eclipse and the imagery of the grand cross]

Saturn changes sign and moves from Leo to Virgo, intensifying the Virgo theme of the eclipse and heralding a new collective mood. It is time for deep self reflection and analysis and efficiency may become the new buzz word. [More information in part 3]

The Mysteries of Virgo challenge us to embrace an ideal of perfection, examine ourselves against this ideal and then undergo a process of purification and refinement. Virgo then calls for us to give back to society in some way; to find some personally meaningful way of serving others and our community.

The negative polarity of Virgo can be judgemental and critical. We may find a more nit picking and critical tone appearing in the media over the next few years. Analysis and discrimination is constructive but there is a line that we all know that when it is crossed the discussion becomes destructive rather than constructive. Try not to get drawn into the negativity that this transit may constellate.

September 23 sees the Spring Equinox [the Autumn Equinox for our friends in the Northern hemisphere] – also known as the Libra ingress. Esoteric writers say the Sun’s position directly over the equator at the equinoxes leads to a reduction in the earth’s magnetic field that creates optimal conditions for ritual and meditation.

 2.    Solar Eclipse of September 11 at 18 Virgo

10:45 pm
Australian Eastern Standard Time, 12:45pm Greenwich Mean Time

This eclipse follows the lunar eclipse of August 28. Solar Eclipses are potent new moons that can only occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth align within 10 degrees of the transiting nodes of the moon. This alignment occurs twice each year and there is usually a lunar eclipse the full moon before and/or after a solar eclipse. The last eclipse season was 6 months ago – in March 2007 – and the last solar eclipse was on March 19 at 28 Pisces

This eclipse has a very potent and potentially destructive chart containing a mutable grand cross. The Sun/Moon conjunction is opposed by Uranus in Pisces and squared by Mars in Gemini and Pluto and Jupiter in Sagittarius. What might this mean?

The mutable grand cross can create a high degree of tension as four energies pull in different [and incompatible] directions. The danger is getting caught in the details and running round in circles trying to attend to every detail. My advice is to work on resting in your centre so you can see the big picture that is at work here. Change, catharsis and letting go are all indicated as intrinsic components of this eclipse and will feature for anyone with planets in mid degrees of mutable signs.

Uranus opposing the eclipse point warns about the need for change that may lead to impulsive action and the likelihood of disruptive events. What no longer serves our wholeness may dramatically fall apart if we cannot or will not make the changes that our heart calls for. People and things who have felt under pressure are likely to snap – verbally and physically.

Mars features very prominently in the eclipse chart; squaring the Sun/Moon and Uranus and opposing Pluto. Mars highlights concerns about anger, assertion and aggression both personally and collectively. This is not a good time to lose your temper as the results could have far reaching effects. It is also wise to avoid angry, aggressive people and those who would seek to involve you in power games.  The trigger dates for this volatile and potentially explosive energy are:

  • September 3 when Mars squares Uranus
  • September 18: when Mars squares the eclipse point exactly
  • September 21 when Mars opposes Pluto.

Pluto is sitting on the Galactic Centre and making a wide square to the eclipse point [8ï orb] underlining the Plutonic process that has been with us since Pluto began its transit of the Galactic Centre last year. This calls on us to continue to face our fears and release all that holds us back from moving forward and embracing the higher wisdom that is symbolized by the Galactic Centre.

All eclipses can herald a crisis but they also provide the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start again. Eclipses tend to be neutral energetically but they function to bring to the surface whatever has been buried, hidden and repressed. If we are working constructively with the energy of Virgo and the areas of life [house position and planets] that are found in this sign then we may find very little is stirred up. Eclipse points become more personal when they fall on planets or angles in the birth chart. Then they can herald potent endings and beginnings in the affairs of the planet they trigger.

This solar eclipse will be the second in the sign of Virgo [last September there was an eclipse at 29ï Virgo] and will activate the Virgo archetype and themes collectively and personally. This eclipse also invites us all to reflect on how we deal with this energy. Remember, eclipses are potent times to:

  • Face our fears and shadows
  • Confront the past and what we have buried
  • Let go of whatever is holding us back
  • Set a new intention and be willing to move forwards

On the positive side this is a time to reflect on how you can be of service as well as how you can improve the area of life where Virgo is found in your birth chart. Virgo seeks perfection and efficiency so pay attention to the details and see what needs refining. A Virgo eclipse is a great time to get healthy and start a health regime – perhaps try that new diet or start that yoga class you have been meaning to get to for ages.

Virgo is the worrier of the zodiac and tends to experience high levels of anxiety. At this time we are all focused on the area of our chart where Virgo is found and need to find a way to come to terms with this energy. The inner critic may rear its head as well along with any obsessive- compulsive tendencies that we may try to contain or repress.

The Virgo challenges to reflect on at this time are to

·        Embrace the principle of service while avoiding self sacrifice and criticism

·        Find a way to maintain a vision of wholeness and perfection while allowing the self and others to be less than perfect

·        Find a way to analyse and discriminate without becoming too fussy and picky

·        Not get lost/ overwhelmed by the details and lose sight of the big picture

If your birthday is five days either side of the solar eclipse on September 11 it could mark the end of a period of difficulty. It will be very empowering to set new intentions for your life and create a small ritual to honour this event.

Eclipses are said to be very potent times to meditate as they mark the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. These eclipses have a 19 year cycle and fall on the same degrees as the eclipses of March 1988.  Can you remember what was happening then? It may be time to revisit and release something that resonates with this time. Remember, you have 19 more years of growth and consciousness to help you with this task.

 3.    Saturn to Virgo·

September 2 at 11:49pm AEST,   September 2 at 1:49pm GMT

Saturn, [the Reality Principle and Lord of Karma] moves into the sign of Virgo on September 2, intensifying the Virgo theme of the Solar Eclipse and calling us to embrace the Mysteries of Virgo. Saturn takes about 29 ½ years to orbit the Sun and therefore spends about 2 ½ years in each sign. Saturn will transit Virgo until July 2010 after a brief entry into Libra during late October 2009 through to early April 2010..

Saturn always challenges us to take responsibility for our lives and offers us the opportunity to learn from life and develop wisdom and maturity.  As Saturn transits Virgo it challenges us to review and restructure the realm of Virgo personally and collectively. Virgo seeks perfection but can inadvertently become critical and judgemental as it strives to do its best. Sometimes the perfection seems so unattainable that Virgo gives up completely and retreats into chaos and cynicism.

Saturn in Virgo will challenge us all to become more efficient and professional and attend to the details of life. It is an appropriate time for self reflection and purification on all levels. You may feel called to reflect on

  • Your health- maybe start a diet or begin a new fitness regime
  • Your daily routine – how efficient are your habits and routines
  • Your skill base – what do you need to learn?

Beware the tendency to judge others harshly – and also stay alert to the likelihood of harsh self judgement and criticism. If you find yourself falling into the negative Virgo polarity, try to balance this by stepping back and looking at the big picture every now and again and allowing yourself to feel some compassion.

If you know the house where Virgo is found in your chart you can ask yourself the following questions.

  • What are my priorities here?
  • What work needs to be done?
  • What can I take responsibility for?
  • What responsibilities have I been avoiding?
  • What fears do I need to face?
  • Am I giving in to fear and negativity? To my inner critic and saboteur?

Saturn moving into Virgo will challenge all Virgo’s over the next 2 ½ years as well as those with planets in Virgo and all the other mutable signs of Pisces, Gemini and Sagittarius. Those born in the first week of each of these signs will feel the effects over the next few months.

 4. The Spring Equinox

Sunday September 23
marks the Libra Ingress, better known as the Spring Equinox in the southern hemisphere. At 7:51pm Australian Eastern Standard Time the Sun will move into the sign of Libra and be exactly overhead at the equator. This marks the time when day and night are of equal length but it is the turning point that marks the time when the daylight begins to prevail over the darkness. From this point forward the days will grow longer as the Sun gains power and strength. It is time to let go the darkness of winter and embrace the fertility of Spring. At this time of year it is the Warrior/Amazon energy that we invoke to assist us to move forward into the new cycle.

Esoteric writers say this is a magical time when the magnetic field of the Earth is influenced by the Sun’s position directly overhead the equator. A doorway or portal opens to other realms due to a reduction in the Earth’s magnetic field. This is a powerful time for ritual and meditation that can offer us wisdom, inspiration and guidance. The equinox energy lasts for about 24 hours either side the exact moment.

 A Private Spring Equinox Ritual

Choose a candle in a colour that symbolizes your desire. Begin by having a ritual bath or shower to wash away the darkness of winter and the past year. As you bathe, see and feel the past being released so you can embrace the exciting new energy of Spring. When you are ready sit quietly, centre yourself and invoke your Highest Inspiration then call for the assistance of your Inner Warrior as you light your candle.

Reflect on what you wish to manifest in your life [making sure that you do not influence the free will of any other individual] and record you intentions in your journal or on a special piece of paper. Now sit back and visualize your desire manifesting as you gain strength and power from the Spring Sun. Most importantly FEEL the pleasure and joy that comes from the realization of your desires.

When you have finished give thanks and surrender your desires as the Universe may have other plans [often even better] than you have imagined. Keep your candle to light whenever you need to energize your desires. Blessed be!
