 Astrology Newsletter: September 2009

Number 66

September sees the 3rd Saturn / Uranus opposition which falls within a few days of Pluto stationing and turning direct; a volatile combination that requires delicate handling. All this takes place within the context of Mercury retrograde – giving us all plenty to think about and work with this month.

On Saturday September 12 I am offering my annual Chart Calculation Workshop. Please ring or email if you would like more information about this day.

 Blessings

1.    September Overview

All dates and times are for Australian Eastern Standard Time

Jupiter, Chiron, Uranus and Neptune all remain retrograde throughout September

  • September 5: Full Moon in Pisces
  • September 7: Mercury retrogrades at 6 Libra
  • September 12: Pluto moves direct at 0 Capricorn
  • September 13: Saturn quincunxes Neptune
  • September 15: Saturn opposes Uranus
  • September 18: Mercury to Virgo
  • September 19: New Moon in Virgo
  • September 20: Venus to Virgo
  • September 23: Sun to Libra: Spring Equinox
  • September 29: Mercury moves direct at 21 Virgo

Jupiter, Chiron, Uranus, and Neptune all continue their retrograde motion, emphasizing the process of review and reflection that has been a prominent feature of the last couple of months. Pluto leaves the retro pack and moves direct on September 12.

Mercury retrogrades on September 7 and will turn direct again on September 29 so keep your sense of humour and call on your reserves of patience to deal with the delays, misunderstandings and general chaos that often characterizes Mercury’s retrograde motion[See section 3 for more information]

Pluto stations at 0Ò Capricorn 39 on September 15 as it prepares to resume forward motion. The times when a planet stations are when it is said to be most powerful - it is as if the God is standing still and demanding we notice him.  Pluto invites us to engage in deep soul searching and confront our fears and own our shadows and whatever we have buried there. This station highlights all the fears and issues that Pluto’s current transit of Capricorn has constellated.

Pluto is transiting Capricorn until November 2024, transforming all things ruled by Capricorn: business, government, large bureaucratic and institutional structures as well as all authority structures including armies and police forces. This is a period of contraction that is a natural response to the expansionary energy of Sagittarius that prevailed while Pluto transited Sag from 1995 to 2008-9. Many structures that have become bloated and excessive will break down [or are breaking down] so they can undergo the plutonic process of death and rebirth. What has substance will prevail, and it is important not fall into fear about this transit as it could provide the grounding and restructuring that is so necessary at the moment.

Around September 16 & 17 the Sun opposes Uranus and conjuncts Saturn – activating the current Uranus / Saturn opposition. This, heralds the key moment in Uranus’s retrograde cycle. We have the capacity to gain greater clarity and consciousness about how we are utilizing the Uranian principle of change, innovation, reform and rebellion, especially regards the affairs of the house where Uranus is currently transiting in our birth chart. This alignment offers us potential illumination and awakening if we can avoid the pitfall of over-reacting to past limitations. Uranus is called the Great Awakener and is said to connect our mind to the Divine Mind or the Organizing Power of the Universe. Its energy demands that we express our individuality and authenticity and free our self from past limitations without acting out, running away or creating chaos. This transit will act as a trigger point for the Saturn / Uranus opposition that peaks for the third time on September 15. See section two for more details.

2.    Saturn opposite Uranus: September 15

This article is taken from my website so many of you may have already digested this information.

Saturn opposes Uranus for the third of five transits that will take place over 2 ½ years. The first of these transits coincided with the election of Barack Obama to the U.S. Presidency. The dates when these aspects become exact are:

  • November 5 2008
  • February 5 2009
  • September 15 2009
  • April 27 2010
  • August 27 2010

Here we see the two old mythological foes, Uranus and Saturn, forming a tense aspect that speaks of conflict between the forces of change, freedom and liberation [Uranus] and the forces of conservatism and the status quo [Saturn]: Saturn symbolizes the old, Uranus the new. Uranus also rules new technological inventions and innovation generally while Saturn is associated law and order, all administrative institutions including those in the domains of government and finance.

Both planets have their constructive and destructive sides and the opposition tends to bring out the conflict between them so the two energies can be re-balanced in a more productive way.

 We can therefore say:

·        The forces of change and progress [Uranus] are putting pressure on governmental and financial structures [Saturn]

·         There is a need to re-structure [Saturn] some of the freedoms [Uranus] that the financial sector, bureaucracy and law and order institutions have enjoyed.

·        There is a need for more responsibility [Saturn] in implementing the New Technology [Uranus]

Some western leaders, including our own Kevin Rudd, are talking of the need for major restructuring and re-regulating [Saturn] of excessive capitalism [Uranus]. Furthermore we are experiencing climate change as a result of irresponsible application of scientific innovations.

Somehow we need to find a way to use these two energies constructively so we can move forward as a global community. This suggests:

  • Responsible [Saturn] application of the New Technology [Uranus] in a way that doesn’t create chaos [Uranus] or stagnation [Saturn]
  • Constructive change [Uranus] of Government, bureaucracy, law and order, financial institutions [Saturn] so they can function more efficiently [Saturn] and reflect the current changes [Uranus] in the world situation.

These aspects mark the mid-point of the Saturn-Uranus cycle that began in 1988 when Saturn conjuncted Uranus. This heralded the end of the old communist structures when Berlin Wall came down and the USSR underwent a melt down. The world order changed irrevocably then and it will again… or has already!

The last two times we have experienced an opposition between these two planets were in 1965 - 7 and 1918 - 20. The mid-sixties were a time of massive social change when the old social order crumbled under a youth lead revolt that called for more freedom and social equality. The conservative backlash was just as strong but it was not able to constrain the Uranian forces of change.

 Personally, what might this mean?

The outer, collective drama will be played out internally for all of us, and externally for any individuals who will have planets aspected by Saturn and Uranus over the next three years.

We are all called to find a bridge between the past and the future, between our need for freedom, change and innovation and our need for stability. We need to find responsible ways to embrace change, let go our fear of the unknown and be willing to pioneer the creation of new life structures. We also need to make sure we don’t go overboard in our desire for change [Uranus] and throw the baby out with the bath water. We need to examine our lives and see what is useful and needs to be retained, but the opposition does suggests the form rather than the essence may need to undergo a process of re-evaluation so it can move us forwards in a new way.

3.    Mercury retrograde: September 7 to 29

Mercury entered the retrograde loop on August 18 in preparation for turning retrograde on September 7, a process that heralds a new Mercury cycle that will begin on September 20 when Mercury conjuncts the Sun.

The whole retrograde phase is a potent time for reflection and review – a time when we can become aware of habitual beliefs and thought patterns and make the adjustments necessary to align our thinking with the person we are now. This is a great time to meditate, reflect, research, seek answers, sort out your paperwork, return calls and generally attend to all the things you have been too busy to do earlier.

This s also a time when normal communications can go haywire and things often don’t run to plan.

Remember to be patient, maintain your sense of humour, CHECK ALL PLANS, BACK UP YOUR DATA AND DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY IF THINGS GO WRONG!

Currently Mercury is still visible in the evening sky but he will disappear for   about a week when he is lost in the blaze of the Sun - September 15 to 25 - to re-appear in the sky just before sunrise in late September. In esoteric terms this is the most intense and powerful part of the retrograde process as this when Mercury assumes his alter ego as Psychopomp and Guide to the Underworld. In this role Mercury is associated with the Egyptian scribe Thoth, who has access to the Halls of Record [Akashic records]. Esoteric writers suggest that the retrograde phase of Mercury creates an opening that allows access to the wisdom of our soul and the wisdom of the Cosmos..

Key dates

·        Exact dates: September 7 to 29

·        Sensitive degrees: 21 Virgo to 6 Libra

·        Full time of influence: August18 to October 14

·        Time for insight: September 20 when New Mercury Cycle begins  [Mercury conjunct the Sun]

·        Time to act on new ideas / beliefs: September 29 to October 14

As the retrograde cycle moves mainly through the signs of Libra and Virgo it is inviting us to attend to all things ruled by these signs:

  • Libra draws our attention to our relationships and partnerships as well as our need for harmony, co-operation, fairness and social justice. This may be a time when you are called on to see things from others’ perspectives and make some compromises for the sake of harmony.
  •  Mercury retrogrades into Virgo on September 18. Virgo draws our attention to our need to create order and function efficiently. This is time for analysis and discrimination without the [self] criticism or destructive perfectionism and worry that Virgo often constellates.

Remember Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs.

Concerns may arise over the first few weeks and the answers and insight can appear when the new cycle begins on September 20, Sit with your insights until after September 29 when Mercury goes direct. The next few weeks are the time to express your insights and put new plans into action.

4.    The Spring Equinox

September 23 marks the Libra Ingress, better known as the Spring Equinox in the southern hemisphere. At 7.20 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time the Sun will move into the sign of Libra and be exactly overhead at the equator. This marks the time when day and night are of equal length but it is the turning point that marks the time when the daylight begins to prevail over the darkness. From this point forward the days will grow longer as the Sun gains power and strength. It is time to let go the darkness of winter and embrace the fertility of spring. At this time of year it is the Warrior/Amazon energy that we invoke to assist us to move forward into the new cycle.

Esoteric writers say this is a magical time when the magnetic field of the Earth is influenced by the Sun’s position directly overhead the equator. A doorway or portal opens to other realms due to a reduction in the Earth’s magnetic field. This is a powerful time for ritual and meditation that can offer us wisdom, inspiration and guidance.  The equinox portal is open for about 24 hours either side the exact moment.

 A Private Spring Equinox Ritual

Choose a candle in a colour that symbolizes your desire. Begin by having a ritual bath or shower to wash away the darkness of winter and the past year. As you bathe, see and feel the past being released so you can embrace the exciting new energy of Spring. When you are ready sit quietly, centre yourself and invoke your Highest Inspiration then call for the assistance of your Inner Warrior as you light your candle.

Reflect on what you wish to manifest in your life [making sure that you do not influence the free will of any other individual] and record you intentions in your journal or on a special piece of paper. Now sit back and visualize your desire manifesting as you gain strength and power from the Spring Sun. Most importantly FEEL the pleasure and joy that comes from the realization of your desires.

When you have finished give thanks and surrender your desires as the Universe may have other plans [often even better] than you have imagined. Keep your candle to light whenever you need to energize your desires.
