 Astrology Newsletter:   February 2009

The challenging Saturn/Uranus opposition that coincides with much of the current financial chaos returns for the second of five transits this month. This confronting energy is tempered by a current of optimism symbolized by Jupiter's transit of Aquarius and its conjunction with the North Node around the middle of the month.

Astrology classes begin this month. Enrolments are welcome for the first, second and third year programs.

 Blessings

 1.    February Overview

All dates and times are for Australian Eastern Daylight Time

  • February 1: Mercury moves direct
  • February 3: Venus to Aries
  • February 5: Mars to Aquarius
  • February 5: Saturn opposition Uranus
  • February 10: Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse in Leo
  • February 13: Jupiter conjunct the North Node
  • February 15: Mercury to Aquarius
  • February 18: Sun to Pisces
  • February 18: Mars conjunct Jupiter [near the North Node]
  • February 21: Mercury leaves the retrograde loop
  • February 25: New Moon in Pisces

February starts with Mercury stationery and moving direct. Remember that everything is still moving slowly for the first week, but it is time to begin to act on the new insights that may have arisen over the last few weeks, especially since January 20 when the new Sun / Mercury cycle began.

February sees a major shift of energy to the sign of Aquarius with Mars and Mercury joining the Sun, Jupiter, the North Node, Chiron and Neptune in Aquarius by mid-month. The heavier Capricornian vibration of December and early January has receded to allow a more optimistic and future oriented mood that can potentially lead to constructive changes and breakthroughs.

Aquarius is a sign of innovation and represents humanity's desire to create meaningful change that can lead to progress, especially in the cultural, social, political and technological spheres. Hopefully this will lead to some spirited debate that could result in constructive action as the May Jupiter, Chiron, and Neptune triple conjunction in Aquarius slowly begins to come into aspect. This conjunction, along with the ongoing Saturn/ Uranus opposition, is one of the two most significant aspects of 2009. Interestingly, Barack Obama has become the voice of both of these transits.

February 5 sees the second of five oppositions between Uranus and Saturn. Here we see the forces of change, democracy, equality and universal brother/sisterhood [Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius] clashing with Saturn [the ruler of Capricorn], the status quo, tradition, conservatism, fear and rigidity.

Saturn opposed Uranus on November 5 [AEDT] for the first of five transits that will take place over the next 2 ½ years. The dates when these aspects become exact are: November 5 2008, February 5 2009, September 15 2009, April 27 2010 and August 27 2010

The first Uranus/Saturn opposition took place on the day of the U.S election and has created a major shift in international relations that many would say is a shift for the better. Barack Obama, a Leo Sun sign with an Aquarian ascendant has come to embody the Aquarian / Uranian archetype. He talks the language of Aquarius and has captured the spirit of hope and optimism. His talk of change [Uranus/ Aquarius] acknowledges the difficulties, obstacles and fears [Saturn/ Capricorn] need to be faced.

See Newsletter 56: November 2008 for more information

February 10 is the Full Moon and a Lunar Eclipse in the sign of Leo. It will be visible here in the Southern Hemisphere as the eclipse takes place in the early hours of the morning. Eclipses always take place on the nodal axis and are peak times in the transit of the nodes through a particular polarity [currently Aquarius - see below]. This eclipse has a Chironic and Neptunian flavour and heralds the Jupiter, Chiron, Neptune transit that will occur in May. Old wounds and disappointments may surface for re-examination and healing under this eclipse but the Jupiterian energy [see below] suggests the ability to see things in a more optimistic light. To work with this energy constructively, accept any old patterns that arise, sit with them and see if you let go your ego attachments and move forward. Aquarius is a very rational sign and invites us to become more detached about the old ego wounds that the eclipse in Leo may activate.

February 13 sees Jupiter conjunct the North Node in Aquarius, an image of hope and optimism that is very much needed at the moment. Jupiter represents the Principle of Growth and Expansion and its current transit of Aquarius suggests the expansion of the Aquarian archetype which includes the reformer, the humanitarian, the social scientist and the inventor. Jupiter in Aquarius suggests the potential to become more optimistic and create the meaningful change that Uranus opposition Saturn is calling for over the next 18 months. The North Node is also a future oriented point that calls us to move toward the constructive expression of the sign it is transiting [Aquarius] and face challenges necessary to allow for humanity's evolutionary growth. It suggests there is potential for big [Jupiter] breakthroughs [North Node] in technology and humanitarian visions and projects [Aquarius]. On a personal level it encourages greater optimism, community involvement and a desire for a more humanitarian outlook, especially for those who are more open minded and willing to embrace change. Hopefully the positive energy this generates will see some very positive shifts at both the personal and collective levels.

February 18 sees Mars conjunct Jupiter [near the North Node], energizing further the Aquarian archetype and themes. Just beware that both these planets are quite impulsive so make sure to ground your humanitarian visions and impulses in reality so the energy is not dissipated. This aspect can also symbolize impulsive and angry actions and reactions so try to avoid getting drawn into conflicts [Mars] at this time as they could very easily escalate [Jupiter] and get out of control.

New Moon in Pisces on February 25 is a much gentler lunation than the full moon eclipse earlier in the month. The imagery suggests a softer mood of greater compassion that encourages altruism, imagination and spirituality. Jupiter is still conjunct the North Node and Mercury, encouraging optimism and benevolence while the New Moon is opposite Ceres, inviting us to look at the principles of nurturing and sharing and perhaps to reflect on the following questions. How do you give and receive nurturing? What nurtures you? Are you able to let go your attachments and share what is of most importance to you with others?

  2.    Jupiter to Aquarius: January 6 2009 to January 18 2010

Jupiter completed its transit of Capricorn last month and moved into the more optimistic and forward looking Aquarius on January 6. Jupiter takes twelve years to orbit the Sun and therefore spends about 12 months in each of the twelve signs. Jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius and symbolizes the Principle of Expansion. Traditionally Jupiter is also known as the Greater Benefic - the bringer of Good Fortune - but this is not always the case. Anything Jupiter touches tends to grow and expand, so when Jupiter transited Capricorn [ruled by Saturn] the Capricorn archetype was activated, including the serious desire for greater substance, structure and conservatism as well as the Capricorn shadow of fear and negativity that contributed to the enormous [Jupiter] contraction [Capricorn] of the world economy [Capricorn]. This was emphasized by Pluto's entry into Capricorn in 2008. Jupiter in Capricorn acted as an accelerant for Pluto's ingress into the sign, hence the global economy contracted [Capricorn] much faster than most people expected.

Jupiter's transit of Aquarius is very different as we can expect to see an expansion in all things Aquarian including:

  • Science & Technology
  • Invention & Innovation
  • Social justice
  • Sense of community
  • All things alternative - social as well as scientific
  • Community awareness & group participation

I would expect to see a more humanitarian response to the Global Financial Crisis under this transit as well as some highly original inventions that could benefit humanity. This transit may also generate a greater awareness of community that could lead to more people getting involved in community groups of any kind and hopefully being willing to assist those who face hardship.

The shadow side of Aquarius may also be activated. This may lead to some people detaching as a survival mechanism. At its extreme Aquarius can be cold or even callous in its detachment. Aquarius can also become self righteous to the point of fanaticism. In mundane astrology Aquarius is associated with the far right in politics [Sarah Palin is an Aquarian]. Unfortunately I would expect to see a rise in right wing political groups during 2009, especially given the current GFC. The current situation will play into the hands of those who seek simplistic solutions that blame other racial and religious groups for their problems. Hopefully the positive archetype, currently embodied by Barack Obama, will prevail.
