Mercury moves direct on August 1 but does not leave the retrograde ‘loop’ until August 15. The few days either side of August 1 may be particularly chaotic as Mercury adjusts to the change of direction. Mercury is in opposition to Pluto from July 16 through to August 13, keeping the pressure on us to speak our truth and face the inner demons that our mind can create.
The heavy retrograde energy from last month continues and intensifies this month with Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Neptune and Pluto all retrograde at the beginning of the month and Uranus joining them on the 12th . Retrograde energy always emphasizes the process of review, reflection and re-evaluation, both personally and collectively. If things aren’t working, or you feel flat, discouraged and frustrated, accept this as an opportunity to find a new way forward and embrace this opportunity to find a new modus operandi that reflects the person that you aspire to become. The annual retrograde movement of all the superior planets from Jupiter out is a reminder that we need to undergo a regular internal stock-take and see if our outer world is congruent with our inner world.
More specifically, the current retrograde patterns provide us all with the opportunity to re-think how we utilize the energy of:
Mercury – our mind – how we think and communicate.
Jupiter - our confidence, optimism and faith. Jupiter calls us to expand our horizons and see past our everyday limited perspective to grasp the big picture. Can you identify any limiting beliefs that may be keeping you trapped? Are your over confident? Not confident / optimistic enough?
Saturn - calls us to claim our authority, take responsibility for our current situation and avoid the blame game. He can activate our Inner Critic but also challenges us to create strong, healthy boundaries. If we feel flat it is Saturn’s way of goading us to take CONSTRUCTIVE ACTION. It can be a call to take the bull by the horns and do something we have been avoiding that we know we need to do.
Chiron – our ability to reconcile opposites and come to terms with our physical and emotional wounds and integrate this with our spirituality. Are you stuck in your wounds and unable to let them go? How might this serve you in some perverse way? Are you ready to let go an attachment to being the victim and be who you really are, warts and all?
Uranus stations retrograde on August 12 - calling our attention to our need to be authentic, express our individuality and find our own unique way of being. Are you giving in to your super ego and not being true to yourself? Is your inner critic stopping you from making the changes that your soul knows it requires to grow? Or are you acting out and sabotaging yourself by running away or engaging in rebellious behaviour, just to prove a point?
Neptune – our ability to surrender our ego and open to the imaginal, spiritual and transpersonal realms. Do you listen to your intuition and have some way of accessing the guidance that comes through the symbolic realm of images and feelings? Are you in touch with your feelings and able to accept them as messengers from your soul?
Pluto - challenges us to reflect on self-mastery, embrace our fears about letting go our personal will and let go ego based power and control so we can surrender to our Higher Self / Divine Will. What are you holding onto that no longer serves you and keeps you trapped in a fear based paradigm? How can you work with your fear so it no longer controls you …or has less control?
The New Moon in Leo falls on August 1 and illuminates the area of our chart [and psyche] where Leo is located… the area of life where we want to discover our gift for creative self-expression and may have a need for recognition, appreciation and validation. Uranus square the New Moon brings an unpredictable energy into play, especially as Uranus is stationing and preparing to move retrograde on the 12th. It emphasizes the collective instability and the call to change and awaken to new possibilities. We need to beware of impulsive and erratic behaviour that may be destructive while remaining open to new perspectives that can be liberating.
The New Moon is always an opportune time to make resolutions and begin new projects; hence this new moon challenges us to embrace our need to shine, feel special and appreciated. The proviso here is to beware the shadow side of Leo that can be egotistical, aggressive and grandiose. With the heavy retrograde influence it may be possible to discover and release blocks to self-expression.
The Full Moon in Aquarius falls on August 15 and highlights the Leo / Aquarius polarity, inviting us reflect on how we balance these two energies. The Leo archetype encompasses the performer and the monarch [King and Queen] while the Aquarian archetype includes the rebel, the reformer, the humanitarian and the social worker. Leo’s challenge is to master the ego while the Aquarian challenge is to be a vehicle for reform and social change. This eclipse is asking us to find a way to balance our personal, ego based needs with those of ‘other’ where ‘other’ may be friends, local community or the wider global community.
The Full Moon is opposite Venus, Mars and Juno [all in Leo and conjunct the Sun], highlighting relationships, partnerships and commitments of all kinds: romantic, marital and business. The energy of the full moon is neutral; it just applies the spotlight to these areas for us to see them more clearly. With Mars involved be are called to action but need to beware of impulsive [over]reaction.
