This is a more conventional newsletter which focuses on the July lunations and the retrograde cycles of the outer planets.
Both lunations this month highlight the Pluto archetype while the New Moon in Cancer also highlights Chiron. Both lunations emphasize the theme of belonging: the Cancer New Moon on a more personal / familial level while the Aquarius Full Moon emphasizes friendships and group connections.

Brief Covid Update The surge in Covid cases here in Australia, and internationally, continues with Jupiter joining Neptune in Pisces [the mundane ruler of viruses,] along with the ongoing square between Pluto and Eris.
The solar eclipse last month fell on Australia’s Pluto, which is the ruler of our 8th house and part of a mutable T-square aspect pattern, highlighting the danger and trauma that we continue to face in many areas: physically [threat of the actual virus] mentally [emotional trauma through fear and lock down] and financially. There is more information about this in the June newsletter.
Retrograde Energy By the end of July all the planets from Jupiter out will be retrograde - except for Uranus which joins the retrograde pack on August 20.
The retrograde motion of the planets can offer us a new angle or perspective on our life and gives us the opportunity to break free of old limiting beliefs, patterns and behaviours that we often don’t notice until we meet blocks, delays, frustration.
Retrograde energy always emphasizes the process of review, reflection and re-evaluation, both personally and collectively. If things aren’t working, or you feel flat, discouraged and frustrated, accept this as an opportunity to find a new way forward that reflects the person that you aspire to become. The annual retrograde movement of all the superior planets from Jupiter out is a reminder that we need to undergo a regular internal stock-take and see if our outer world is congruent with our inner world.
The current retrograde patterns provide us all the opportunity to see how we utilize the energy of the following planets, especially regards affairs of the houses where they are transiting along with the affairs of any planets they currently aspect, especially by conjunction, square and opposition. Look at the chart for the new moon [below] to see the positions of these planets.
Jupiter retrograde – challenges us around our confidence, optimism and faith. Jupiter calls us to expand our horizons and see past our everyday limited perspective to grasp the big picture. Can you identify any limiting beliefs that may be keeping you trapped? Are your over-confident? Not confident / optimistic enough?
Saturn retrograde – challenges us to review our boundaries and issues with authority. Do we need to take responsibility for instead of engaging in the blame game? Saturn retrograde can intensify the voice of our Inner Critic, but if we feel negative / flat / judgemental or self-critical it is Saturn’s way of goading us to take CONSTRUCTIVE ACTION. It can be a call to take the bull by the horns and do something we have been avoiding that we know we need to do.
Chiron retrograde – highlights our ability to reconcile opposites and come to terms with our physical and emotional wounds and integrate this with our spirituality. Are you stuck in your wounds and unable to let them go? How might this serve you in some perverse way? Are you ready to let go an attachment to being the victim and be who you really are, warts and all?
Neptune retrograde – challenges our ability to surrender our ego and open to the imaginal, spiritual and transpersonal realms. Do you listen to your intuition and have some way of accessing the guidance that comes through the symbolic realm of images and feelings? Are you in touch with your feelings and able to accept them as messengers from your soul?
Pluto retrograde - challenges us to reflect on self-mastery and embrace our fears about letting go ego-based power and control so we can surrender to our Higher Self / Divine Will. What are you holding onto that no longer serves you and keeps you trapped in a fear-based paradigm? How can you work with your fear, so it no longer controls you …or perhaps more realistically, has less control over you?
New Moon in Cancer on July 10 at 18 Cancer Cancer New Moons always evoke strong emotional currents and invite us to reflect on family, the past and our emotional connections and bonds. It will stimulate the Cancer archetype and all things ruled by this watery and emotional sign.
Each year the Cancer New Moon presents us with an opportunity to ask ourselves what nurtures us and reflect on our relationship with the Cancer archetype, which includes: • Emotions and feelings • Private life - family life • Parent / child roles and responsibilities • The past • Our emotional security
The New Moon is forming a wide T-square pattern as it is opposite Pluto and square to Chiron and Eris. You may like to read the information above about Chiron and Pluto to gain a deeper insight into the challenges this lunation brings as and relate it to the information below about the Cancer archetype. This is a potent time to: • Honour our feelings • Review emotional attachments • Explore patterns around co-dependency, playing the martyr and the victim • Reflect on what home and belonging mean for us • Look at addictive patterns that fill an inner emptiness • Explore new ways of feeling safe, nurtured and contained.
Full Moon in Aquarius on July 24 at 1 Aquarius 26 The Aquarius Full Moon on July 24 falls in the Leo / Aquarius polarity and asks us to reflect on how we balance these two energies. The Leo archetype encompasses the performer and the monarch [King and Queen] while the Aquarian archetype includes the rebel, the reformer, the humanitarian, and the social worker. Leo’s challenge is to master the ego while the Aquarian challenge is to be a vehicle for reform and social change.
This full moon is conjunct Pluto and in a very wide conjunction to Saturn, reinforcing the New Moon opposition to Pluto. Refer to the information above about the challenges for Pluto and Saturn.
The Full Moon in Aquarius opposing the Sun in Leo, is asking us to find a way to balance our personal, ego-based needs with those of others - friends, family, partners, and members of the local community or the wider global community - and it invites us to share our thoughts and feelings in a balanced way that acknowledges our needs with the needs of others.
This full moon is a logical time to review our friendships and group commitments and see whether we feel validated in those relationships. It also invites us to see how we can contribute to society or our community as Aquarius always seeks to make a difference on a larger scale.
