.May sees the first eclipse season for 2022. The New Moon Solar Eclipse on May 1 AEST is in Taurus and the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse is on May 16 is in Scorpio. The lunar eclipse is especially powerful as it is also a Supermoon and marks the celebration of Wesak, suggesting that this a very potent time to work with our fears and reflect on what is holding us back from living our truth.
These eclipses, along with the May retrograde cycle phenomenon of Mercury are also triggering the charts of Australia, Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese, suggesting some possible surprises, changes and delays around a final outcome in our coming election.
May begins with Pluto retrograde and Mercury stationing retrograde on May 10. Note: All the dates below are for Australian Eastern Standard Time.
May 1: New Moon / Solar Eclipse at 10 Taurus 28
May 3: Venus to Aries
May 4: Jupiter sextile Pluto
May 10: Mercury retrograde at close to 5 Gemini
May 11: Jupiter to Aries
May 16: Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse at 25 Scorpio 18
May 21: Sun to Gemini
May 25: Mars to Aries
May 29: Venus to Taurus
May 30: New Moon at 9 Gemini
The May Eclipses …are both very potent with the Solar Eclipse on May 1 conjunct Uranus and the Lunar Eclipse on May 16 square to Saturn. Eclipses tend to be neutral energetically, but they often bring to the surface whatever has been buried, hidden and repressed, especially regards the sign and house where the eclipse falls in the personal horoscope. Eclipses are markers in the Nodal Cycle and can mark major turning points and sudden changes of direction. They sometimes act as catalysts for major changes that serve our soul’s growth but we may feel changes are being forced on us as they can challenge our resilience and flexibility.
The Eclipses and the Australian Election The Lunar Eclipse on May 16 falls a week before the Federal Election and is opposite Australia’s Moon, suggesting a change in the mood of the masses [the Moon]. Lunar eclipses tend to be more about endings while Solar Eclipses suggest beginnings. With this eclipse conjunct Scott Morrison’s Moon and opposite his Sun it will be interesting to see how this change plays out. There are no birth times available for either Scott Morrison or Anthony Albanese so it is not possible to gin a clearer picture of how the current transits may be impacting on their horoscopes.
Mercury is retrograde over the election time span from May 10 to June 3 – from close to 26 Taurus to 5 Gemini – and conjuncts Australia’s South Node three times during the retrograde loop, suggesting possible delays in seeing a clear result.
New Moon / Solar Eclipse in Taurus The May 1 [April 30 in most of the world] Solar Eclipse falls at 10 degrees of Taurus 28 minutes and is conjunct both the North Node and Uranus. Eclipses can herald a crisis, but they also provide the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start again. In essence, Solar Eclipses are very potent New Moons that mark endings and beginnings. This eclipse will activate:
The house where 10 Taurus is located in your horoscope
Any planets or points between 5 and 15 degrees of fixed signs.
All these places in your horoscope may be under the spotlight and require attention and a conscious shift.
The eclipse intensifies all the themes relating to the transit of Uranus in Taurus, highlighting old patterns and VALUES that are ripe for change. In March I wrote: ‘With the North Node [and Uranus along with the Solar Eclipse] in Taurus, I believe we are being challenged to embrace the Taurean challenges: to become more grounded and pay attention to our bodies and the beautiful body that supports us; Mother Earth. The NN in Taurus is calling us to pay attention to the land, farming, food, the environment, sustainability and of course …climate change. Taurus is essentially practical and challenges us to DO something. Taurus values security and stability, so on a personal level we are being called to examine our values and what security means for us.’
Uranus, the Great Awakener and Principle of Change, is conjunct the eclipse, demanding change in how we deal with [and think about] all things Taurean and asks us to be open to exploring new ways of experiencing the Taurean realm …it seems to suggest a major shift in values, personally and collectively.
Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio This is a very powerful New Moon as it is not only a Total Lunar Eclipse but also a Supermoon and the marker of Wesak. In your horoscope the eclipse will activate:
The house where 25 Scorpio is found [and the opposite house]
Any planets or points between 20 degrees of fixed signs and 0 degrees of mutable signs.
All the areas may require your attention.
Lunar eclipses tend to be more emotional and internal than solar eclipses. They stir up whatever is simmering in our subconscious and are potent times for insight and illumination …once we get past the uncomfortable feelings. Sometimes this may lead to the desire to act, but more often they are about working with polarized feeling states and seeing how we can find a more centred space where we can be this and that, not just this or that.
The New Moon / Lunar Eclipse is also a Supermoon, the first of 4 consecutive Full Moon’s that are closer than usual to the Earth. Supermoons can be up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than ordinary Full Moons and will appear even bigger if you can see them as they rise over the horizon. Be aware that if you are sensitive to the lunar energy, you may experience a strong emotional reaction at this Full Moon. Whatever you are feeling may be intensified, so try to remain conscious and mindful and press the internal pause button if you find yourself reacting, or more importantly, over-reacting.
This is an incredibly potent time for inner work of all kinds. Pay attention to your dreams and find some way to sit still and allow your unconscious to communicate with you. You may find it beneficial to sit with an open mind and observe the feelings and images your unconscious chooses to reveal. Eclipses can be opportunities to face our demons and the self-sabotaging beliefs and habits that are lurking in the shadows of the unconscious and sub-conscious mind. If we take a soul centred perspective, this can be a time powerful to enter into a dialogue with our ‘demons’ and allow them to transform as they come into the light.
Each year the Scorpio full moon marks the annual Festival of the Buddha, known as WESAK, which also coincides with the Supermoon Lunar Eclipse, further intensifying its energy. Wesak honours both the physical birth of the Buddha and his spiritual birth or enlightenment. Wesak invites us to refocus on our spiritual lives and look at what needs to be released or let go, so we can become more compassionate and awakened. The days either side of Wesak /the lunar eclipse are potent times for inner work, reflection, meditation and letting go.
In March I wrote: ‘The transiting South Node [and eclipses] in Scorpio suggests where we can get stuck: in our fears and shadow; perhaps in old hurts and grievances and in the need to control, the need for power and sometimes for revenge. The SN here is challenging us to focus on our collective shadow and embrace forgiveness rather than vengeance. The positive potential of the South Node in Scorpio is to uncover hidden motives and use our knowledge to heal and empower. The gifts that call for release involve finding ways to empower ourselves and others, and to let go the need for control and revenge.’
Saturn forms the apex of a t-square with the Sun and Moon, challenging us with a dose of reality - sometimes harsh reality - in order to prompt us to act and take responsibility. Beware that this may activate our inner critics and negative self-talk but if we can avoid falling in the darkness and instead ask ourselves what we need to learn here, the way ahead may be revealed.
Mercury Retrograde: May 10 to June 3: 5 Gemini to 26 Taurus. Mercury stations retrograde on May 10 at close to 5 degrees of Gemini - the sign of its rulership - and remains retrograde until June 3 when it turns direct at close to 26 degrees of Taurus. As the new cycle begins in Gemini, it intensifies the challenge to re-view and re-evaluate all things connected with this archetype, especially our thinking and communicating and perhaps our relationships with our siblings. We may also be challenged to review:
the affairs of the house where the retrograde action takes place in your horoscope [26 Taurus to 5 Gemini].
Any planets any points that fall between 26 degrees of fixed signs and 5 degrees of mutable signs.
The new Mercury Cycle begins around May 22 at close to 0 Gemini. Please be aware that the retrograde phenomenon is activated from the time that Mercury enters the loop to the time that it leaves: around April 27 to June 19. The most chaotic times are when Mercury stations – the few days around May 10 and June 3 when Mercury adjusts to the change of direction. The whole retrograde phase is a potent time for reflection and review … a time when we can become aware of habitual beliefs and thought patterns and make the adjustments necessary to align our thinking with the person we are now. This is a great time to meditate, reflect, research, seek answers, sort out your paperwork, return calls and generally attend to all the things you have been too busy to do earlier.
Remember, Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs.
