March Night Sky [times are for Melbourne] If you get the chance to look to the west soon after sunset, you will see a beautiful conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. It is exact on March 2 at close to 12 degrees of Aries. Both planets are very bright at the moment and they will be visible close to the western horizon from sunset until about 9.20pm AEDT for the first week of March. Venus is currently setting by about 9.20pm and Jupiter later, around 9.30pm, [Melbourne time] so by this time they will sink below the horizon.
Pluto to Aquarius: 2023 to 2044 I will add to this next January when Pluto settles into Aquarius after it retrograde back into Capricorn in June.
On March 23 Pluto will move into Aquarius for the first time in 248 years. It will spend a few months in Aquarius, then retrograde back into Capricorn on June 11 until January 21 2024, when it will settle into Aquarius for the next 20 years.
Pluto was last in Aquarius in the late 1700’s and its change of sign represents a major paradigm shift; astrologers associate the current sign of Pluto as the key to the current mass consciousness. As the furthest planet from the Sun and the least conscious, Pluto is considered a transpersonal planet, with its sign influencing the collective more than the individual. It has been suggested it reflects a collective fascination – or obsession – with all things ruled by the sign it is transiting, hence we are moving from a Capricorn to an Aquarian paradigm. As Lord of the Underworld the mythic Pluto, known as Hades to the Greeks, rules the process of death, rebirth and transformation, hence He seeks to bring to light what has been hidden and exerting control over us through [sometimes unconscious] fear.
While Pluto has been in Capricorn – 2008 to 2024 – we have seen a major focus on Capricorn concerns: power, authority /authoritarianism, conservatism, government, finance, the economy, money and materialism in general. Pluto seeks to transform all things associated with the sign, but it also releases the shadow. During this time, we have seen more authoritarian leaders [in many spheres of life, not just politics] of a conservative and patriarchal bent, some exhibiting the shadow Capricorn which can be the tyrant and bully who uses force, shame and blame to deflect responsibility. Nationalism, patriotism and the curtailing of civil rights have all been part of this scenario, but all this is set to change...
With Pluto’s shift into Aquarius, we can expect a major shift. I would expect the major social change to continue as individuals and minorities find their voice with more confidence and assert their rights. This has begun with Saturn’s movement through Aquarius [2020 to 2023] with many more minority groups finding their voices and developing a greater sense of community. Covid helped this process with a massive pivot online. We were catapulted into the digital world much faster than we expected and sort out connections with like-minded people.
The last time Pluto was in Aquarius – 248 years ago was also a time of major social change. We experienced the French Revolution in 1789 with its call to Liberty, Equality and Fraternity; Uranus was discovered in 1781 with the new invention – the telescope - that shattered the boundaries of the known world of Saturn & the Industrial Revolution changed the whole structure of society.
Full Moon in Virgo on March 7 at close to 17 Virgo.
The March full moon chart has the Sun, Neptune, and Mercury all in Pisces opposing the full moon in Virgo, square to Mars, calling us to ground our Piscean dreams, pay attention to our health and the more mundane physical realities and practicalities of everyday life.
The chart contains a lot of mutable energy with 5 of the ten planets in mutable signs: the Moon in Virgo, Sun, Mercury, and Neptune in Pisces along with Mars in Gemini. The danger here is scattering our energy and running the risk of falling into excessive busy-ness and anxiety if we feel we have to fix everything all at once.
The Virgo Full Moon is always a call to re-balance body, mind and spirit and become more grounded. It is an opportunity to see if we are lost in our dreams [Pisces] or lost in the everyday details and ‘busy-ness’ of our life [Virgo]. How can we create more balance between these realms?
Virgo is the perfectionist and worrier of the zodiac so this full moon challenges us to find more gentleness and compassion for ourselves and others [Sun, Neptune, Jupiter and Mercury in Pisces ] It may require letting go destructive [self] criticism and judgements that generate anxiety and alienation [dysfunctional Virgo].
One way this can play out is retreating into destructive escapist patterns to numb our feelings of imperfection, but the opposition is challenging us to bring these two polarities into harmony: how can we create grounded, practical rituals that enhance both our physical and psychological wellbeing?
New Moon In Aries: March 22 at close to 1 Aries The New Moon is always a powerful time to start new projects that require courage and initiative, especially so when it takes place in the sign of Aries, the first sign in the zodiac. Aries symbolizes the Warrior archetype which challenges us to define what we want to achieve, make plans, and take action. Aries also invites us to assert our sense of self directly and openly and have the courage to pursue what we want.
The fiery, dynamic energy of Aries calls for conscious channelling of the Warrior Archetype into constructive outlets, but the lunation is in a conjunction to Neptune in Pisces and square to Mars in Gemini. There is a warning here against excessive haste and impulsive action, especially when it comes from a space of anxiety or reactory anger. Sit still with any major decisions until they feel right, and as always, find some time to press the pause button and listen to your heart [Neptune] before you jump into anything …including arguments, new commitments or plans.
