October begins with Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto all retrograde Note: All the dates below are for Australian Eastern Daylight Time.
October 6: New Moon in Libra

October 9: fifth and final exact square between Pluto & Eris
October 10: Mercury Conjunct the Sun: Inferior Conjunction
October 19: Mercury stations direct
October 21: Full Moon in Aries
October 22: Mars squares Pluto and opposes Eris, triggering the Pluto Eris square
October 23: Sun to Scorpio
November 1: Mars to Scorpio
Pluto squares Eris on October 9 This is the fifth and final square between these two transpersonal planets, both resident in the outer realms of the solar system in what is called the Kuiper belt. These [so called dwarf] planets have been forming a stressful square aspect with each other from early last year and it is a potent symbol of the fear, chaos, conflict, power struggles and death that has been part of the pandemic, as well as the pandemic itself [as does the challenge in the square between Saturn and Uranus].
Mercury is activating this aspect three times during its retrograde cycle, challenging us to see things from a different perspective, in both our personal lives and regards our view of the larger social and political context. The October lunations and transiting Mars are also triggering this square, highlighting the conflicts challenges [and potentials] inherent in this aspect. .
In Australia we are seeing Pluto square Eris [and Saturn square Uranus] play out in the continuing political conflicts between: state governments, state and federal governments, political parties [and within political parties] …pretty well everywhere we look.
Just recently we have witnessed a few major shifts: the abandonment of the policy to eradicate / suppress covid [in some states]; the decision to change our minds about buying submarines from France …and is now looking like a shift to back zero carbon emissions by 2050. Strange times indeed!
We can certainly expect more shifts and changes over the next 6 weeks at the state, national and international levels.
A few words about the situation in Melbourne… Transiting Eris is currently sitting on the ASC in Victoria’s relocated chart, while Pluto hovers close to the MC and Mercury moves backwards and forwards over the descendant [Mars and the October Full Moon activate this too]. Observing this I had wondered what new curve balls might come our way during September / October / November and expected October to be a difficult month for Victoria with covid. The new challenges have appeared in the violent outburst of anger and conflict in the recent anti-vax / anti lockdown demonstrations in Melbourne along with the earthquake on September 22.
It feels like Mother Earth mirrored the collective anger and has a message for us that may be worthwhile image for reflection. It felt like She was trying to shake some sense into us, but unfortunately, I imagine that everyone will interpret this from a polarized political state to reflect their current world view about covid, lockdowns, masks etcetera so the big question becomes [and always has been]
…Can we let go our fear and anger along with our need to project and blame, both in our personal lives and in our larger world view? This is an immensely powerful time for reflection, journaling and SHADOW WORK!
Here are the trigger dates for when the Pluto square to Eris – which perfects on October 9 - can be activated. These can be times when anger may erupt but this also creates the potential for healing if we can own and accept our personal anger and fear and not project it outwards.
Mercury in Libra square Pluto in Capricorn and opposes Eris in Aries: September 22 & 23, October 1 & 2, November 2 & 3.
New Moon in Libra: October 6
Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun: October 10
Full Moon in Aries: October 21
Mars in Libra square Pluto and opposite Eris: October 22
Mercury Retrograde: September 27 to October 19 [edited and expanded version of what was in last month’s newsletter]. Mercury stationed retrograde on September 27 at close to 25 degrees of Libra, and remains retrograde until October 19, when He turns direct at close to 10 degrees of Libra.
When Mercury made its station on September 27, it formed a T-square with Pluto [at 24 Capricorn] and Eris [at 24 Aries] and will do again around October 2 and then finally on November 3 when it leaves the retrograde loop. As Mercury is stationery around September 27 it is triggering the Pluto Eris square quite actively from mid-September to early Ocober.
What might this mean?
Mercury retrograde always challenges our thinking and asks to look at things differently: it challenges us to think laterally and look at things from a different angle. Sometimes it coincides with a time when hidden information is revealed that leads to a change in our thinking, and perhaps a change in direction.
At its most basic level Mercury retrograde is asking us to review the area of life where the retrograde action will take place: the house and planets that fall in 10 to 26 degrees of Libra as well as any planets within 10 to 26 degrees of cardinal signs.
As the new cycle begins in Libra, it invites us to re-view and re-evaluate all things connected with this archetype: fairness and social justice, co-operation and equality, partnerships & relationships, balance & harmony, beauty. These themes are echoed in the October New Moon and Full Moon.
The shadow side of this configuration can also symbolize destructive / hostile communications and mind games as words are used to control and manipulate [Pluto] and /or create fear, division, competition, and conflict [Eris].
Our personal challenge is to be conscious of our destructive / divisive / vengeful urges and find some way to own them but not act them out … important shadow work.
Please be aware that the retrograde phenomenon is activated from the time that Mercury enters the loop to the time that it leaves: around September 7 to October 19. The most chaotic times are when Mercury stations – the few days around September 27 and October 19 – when Mercury adjusts to the change of direction.
Key dates / degrees
Exact dates: retrograde from September 27 to October 19
Sensitive degrees 10 to 25 Libra
Full time of influence: around September 7 to November 3
Time for insight: around October 10 when the new Mercury cycle begins at the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun at close to 16 degrees of Libra
Time to act on new ideas / beliefs: after October 19 when Mercury goes direct
The whole retrograde phase is a potent time for reflection and review … a time when we can become aware of habitual beliefs and thought patterns and make the adjustments necessary to align our thinking with the person we are now. This is a great time to meditate, reflect, research, seek answers, sort out your paperwork, return calls and generally attend to all the things you have been too busy to do earlier.
Remember, Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs.
The October Lunations …both activate the Libra Aries axis, and have Mars involved. The stakes are a higher around the full moon on the 21st when Eris and Pluto are also involved.
These lunations challenge us to find ways to create external and internal BALANCE around our needs for partnership, fairness, co-operation, and harmony [Libra] with our needs for independence, freedom and autonomy [Aries] without giving in to keep the peace [shadow Libra] or becoming overly aggressive, selfish and egocentric [shadow Aries/ Mars].
The New Moon in Libra on October 6 …is conjunct Mars and opposite Chiron, a combustible image which suggests both the potential for anger [Mars] and healing [Chiron]. Mars fires up perceived unfairness and injustice, especially around the loss of freedom.
Chiron in Aries symbolizes the pain, grief and woundedness we are all feeling regards the loss of our freedom, our jobs, and even our loved ones as well as our need to isolate, wear masks and keep our distance. At one level He validates our pain for us, but He also asks us to ACCEPT it, not GET STUCK there and see the larger picture. We need to own our disenfranchised grief around all the things we have lost and will continue to lose, if we want to come to a space of personal and collective reconciliation and healing with the new reality that we inhabit. Often what is underneath our anger and rage is a deep fear and grief that needs to be made conscious. We all need safe places where we can own the complex feelings that are arising and feel held in safety – and not judged. Sharing with friends, developing online communities, even writing a journal …all can be helpful.
At the collective level Chiron invites us to keep open channels of communication between those who identify as libertarians versus those who identify as responsible, not to get stuck in polarized positions, not see each as the enemy ... and to embrace the polarities internally and allow them [constructive] outlets
On a more mundane level …each year, the Libra New Moon challenges us to see where we have lost our balance in our lives, especially in our relationships. The Libran New Moon is always a powerful time to attend to our partnerships – professional as well as personal – as well as all significant one-on-one relationships.
The Aries Full Moon on October 21 is conjunct Eris, opposite the Sun and Mars with Pluto squaring everything …another very fiery image and potentially destructive, but wonderful time for shadow work and restoring more balance in our lives. Once again, we are challenged to balance our needs for freedom and autonomy [Aries] with our need for relationship [Libra], which involves compromise.
Our challenge here is to find a new balance and try not to react and add to the collective anger. Can we attend to Chiron’s message from the New Moon and come to some form of acceptance and embrace the disenfranchised parts of ourselves and others?
I think I have said enough except to echo …strange times indeed!
